Twenty One Pilots Reach For the Stars

Joseph performing at The Basement
Worthington Christians very own graduate of 2008, Tyler Joseph, and his band, Twenty One Pilots just released their new album vessel this past week.  Along with the release of their new album they were featured on MTV as an "upcoming artist, and one to watch out for in 2013." Twenty One Pilots held a secret free concert at The Basement in Columbus, Ohio to say "thank you" to 300 of their closest fans and help kick off their tour starting January 16 in New York City and ending1 in South Korea on March 2.  WC Senior, Quinn Miller was lucky enough to attend this free concert and said, “The concert was phenomenal, and the crowd was electric and super ecstatic the whole night.”
Back in 2007 Joseph was not known for his music, but rather his prowess on the basketball court.  His basketball coach, Kevin Weakley said, “Joseph was a phenomenal three point shooter and had a very good overall game.”  Choir teacher Karen Klapheke also said good things about him but in a different setting, she said during choir that Joseph was a blast to have in class, and that he was very talented and had a great sense of humor.  “He didn’t have a lot of confidence in his voice back then, but it was fun watching his confidence in his singing voice grow.”  Klapheke also said that she expects to see Twenty One Pilots on the Grammy’s in less than 10 years!  When asked about why she thought Joseph chose a singing career rather than pursuing a basketball career she said.  “I think music was his true passion all along and he has an incredible musical gift from God.  Music can be a lifelong thing where sports careers are short and he hadn’t begun to really explore his musical potential in high school.”
2012 was a huge year for Twenty One Pilots, they got signed to a record deal with Fueled by Ramen, and they performed all over the world.  According to their website http://www.twentyonepilots.com/ they hope 2013 will only be better, they will be re-visiting Japan and they will also be having a concert in South Korea.
Tyler and Josh are in L.A. right now and they just completed an interview with Carson Daly, host of The Voice.  Just before heading off to L.A. Twenty One Pilots held a signing event at Best Buy in Columbus where thousands of people showed up to give support to their hometown band.  Twenty One Pilots love their hometown and hold nothing back when performing for their supporters.http://www.fueledbyramen.com/news/live-twenty-one-pilots-photos-58366

Warriors are starting to click

The Worthington Christian boys varsity basketball season is already more than halfway over. They are 10-4 thus far with just 6 games left. The team has had a pretty good season so far, pulling out some tough wins along the way including Mt. Gilead, Fairbanks, and Johnstown on the road. However, the team has lost four games against Olentangy, Mifflin, Bishop Ready, and North Union.

The most recent games have been at Elgin where the Warriors won in overtime and at North Union where the Warriors lost 69-60 in a hard fought game that went down to the wire. The Warriors have grown collectively as a group and are becoming more cohesive each day. Nate Morris is a senior and plays Forward for Worthington Christian and has been a great spark with his stellar shooting from beyond the arc for the Warriors this year. “We treat every opponent the same, it doesn’t matter how good they may be we go hard every night,” Morris said. Senior point guard, Clayton Siders has had a great season for the Warriors cutting through defenses to score or setting up one of his teammates with great passes. “I play basketball because I am a competitor and I love to win,” said Siders. Coach Kevin Weekly has been coaching at Worthington Christian for many years and has had much success leading the Warriors to several great seasons including going to the Division III State Championship Game just a few years ago. He has seen great talent come through Worthington Christian and he never ceases to get the most out of his players. With just 6 games left this season the Warriors are looking to finish strong and to make a good run in the tournament as well. Clayton Siders said, “The sky is the limit for our success in the tournament.”

The next game is against Bishop Watterson at home on Friday. Bishop Watterson is a great team and it should be a good game to watch. Last season the Warriors had a very successful season and won a district title, beating undefeated and top-ranked Bloom Carroll. They were underdogs in that game but they played harder and smarter to win the District. This year the Warriors hope to do the same and they certainly have the talent to do so. Nate Morris added, “We have grown tougher mentally since the start of the season, but we still have more room for improvement.” It will be interesting to see how far Worthington Christian can make it in the tournament after setting the bar high last year.

WC Actors Exited For 12 Angry Jurors

WC Drama is ready to roll for their winter play!  WC has decided to perform 12 Angry Jurors.  The play features plenty of experienced senior talents, including Jason Boucouras and Aaron Hamilton, who starred in the fall play, God’s Favorite.  The play also features new freshman faces including Ryan Becker and Josh Lozier, who put on a great performance in God’s Favorite as well.
Twelve Angry Jurors is a play by Reginald Rose adapted from his 1954 teleplay that aired on CBS.  Later, a feature film was made for it in 1957. The play's Broadway debut came 50 years later, and was extremely popular. The drama is about a jury forced to consider a homicide trial. This dramatic production gets interesting quick.  The jurors discriminate and fight, but one juror convinces the others that this case is a little more challenging than they thought.
First I sat down with Josh Lozier.  He plays Juror number three, and he likes this role because he can relate to the character.  Juror number three likes to be loud, and is also very outspoken in his opinions.  Lozier is super exited for the play because he loves the “heavy, suspenseful, tense, and sometimes violent mood that is constantly a part of the dialogue.”  He also feels that this play is a good fit for WC because everyone is on stage all the time, so it's a perfect opportunity for people new to the theater experience to get involved.  I even asked him about the upperclassmen, and their influence on his acting.  “Working with experienced seniors is a lot of fun because they can show you the ropes, and also give you great advice, and everyone acts like one big family, so your friendships grow pretty strong, too. Sometimes it is challenging, because you feel like they are superior to you, which undermines your confidence, but everything turns out fine.”
The cast members were definitely very hard at work when I dropped by during practice after school.  Mr. O’Roark was hard at work trying to get lines perfect and create the suspenseful mood that Josh was talking about.  I was surprised at how attentive the cast was.  Mr. O’Roark had their complete attention and they were taking note of everything that he said.  The cast this year is extremely committed, even though they don’t have the most experience.  “It is a unique play, and I wanted a chance to cast a lot of people who are not normally cast in plays,” Mr. O’Roark said.

I also got to talk to Jason Boucouras.  He plays Juror number 7, a character who jokes around, but is serious at the same time.  Jason told me that he always prepares by memorizing and making sure he is ready to present his talent on show night.  I then asked him why the audience would enjoy it. “It is very different from a lot of plays that you see from the theatre department, and brings a different flavor to the table.”
The play starts on Thursday, February 7th and is showing on Friday and Saturday as well.  12 Angry Jurors is going to be a huge success.  The audience is going to feel the intense emotion that this courtroom scene has to offer, and the nice blend of talents will really make this play a memorable one.

Get Healthy and Stay Healthy

With the new year now under way and new resolutions determined, many people are aiming to live a healthier lifestyle in 2013. New year’s resolutions are never a bad thing, but it’s crucial to stay committed to such a lifestyle, or in our culture’s vernacular, to “stick with it” every day. Even in the WC community, the high school faculty is striving to live more healthfully through a special “Employee Wellness Contest” via loseit.com in which individuals earn points for a healthy diet, consistent exercise, and spiritual development. The individual who has collected the most points at the end of nine weeks receives $200. A hefty reward, to be sure, but the benefits of a healthy lifestyle far outweigh any monetary prize.

Nearly everyone knows the components of good health: a nutritional diet and regular exercise. This sounds simple enough, but actually applying these concepts daily is more of a challenge. According to Mrs. Smith, WCHS health teacher, the average high school student should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day for 5-6 days a week. This may sound daunting, but she suggests fun ways to get active, such as group fitness classes and pickup games at parks. “I’m not a morning person,” she admits, but she stresses that consistency in your workouts is what counts. The benefits to regularly exercising are abundant: “Exercise boosts your immune system,” Mrs. Smith offers. She also adds that “it helps to decrease depression” and that emotionally, exercise releases endorphins, which bring out good feelings. Jessica Bush, a WC senior, calls her mom “inspiring” as she “works out every day.” It is no wonder that her mom is her “healthy lifestyle” role model. “She’s a good example of what I want to be like when I’m her age,” Jessica explains.

Exercise, however, is only a part of a healthy lifestyle; nutrition is equally important. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be a drag: even simple additions and changes can improve your diet. Mrs. Smith suggests consuming something every two hours or so “to keep metabolism up.” Satisfying and nutritious snack choices abound: she offers apples and almond butter, carrots and hummus, and celery and low-fat peanut butter as healthy options. Even in a lunch, students can incorporate nutritious food. Mrs. Cunningham, WCHS school nurse, suggests adding fruit, such as an apple or orange, or vegetables such as bell peppers to your lunch to boost its nutritional value in a simple way. In fact, she recommends healthily abundant intakes of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to maximize a diet. Quinoa, too, which she calls “the perfect protein in plant form” and “super nutritious,” lives up to its hype and offers a beneficial addition to your health. Despite the need for a healthy diet, sometimes high school students are just that--high school students. Citing popcorn and tacos as some of her favorite foods, Jessica admits that she “could make a lot wiser choices.” However, she teaches us that the right balance of effort and enjoyment is crucial. “I’m a teenager,” she laughs.

Lately, the flu and other colds have affected countless numbers of people. Although people mistakenly think that many germs are spread by mouth, Mrs. Cunningham corrects this misconception by saying that germs are mostly spread by hands. The logical conclusion, then, is to frequently wash your hands. “Some people just have stronger ones [immune systems],” Mrs. Cunningham explains. This, however, does not nullify actions that can improve your immune system. A “nutritious diet” as well as “good hand washing and plenty of sleep” are simple lifestyle changes that people can factor into their lives to be at their healthiest, as Mrs. Cunningham offers. When people inevitably catch a cold or the flu, Mrs. Cunningham recommends that people “increase sleep, increase fluids.” She also suggests eating foods that are high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, and also even chicken noodle soup, which has been proven to be effective in improving sicknesses. Although for many cases, it is practical to let the illness “run its course,” these simple methods can be of great help in quickening recovery.

With the new year come new goals, and many people aim to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Jessica wants to train for a half marathon, and pertaining to college, she expresses, “I want to make wiser decisions, food-wise.” Whether WCHS chooses to exercise more often or incorporate healthy food into its lunches, may 2013 be a year where students and faculty alike seek to care for their bodies in the best possible way by making healthy lifestyle changes. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get healthy, and stay healthy!
